베네치아 태생. 베네치아 화파의 거장

지식인들과 귀족, 궁정의 찬사를 받으며 초상화가로서 명성을 얻음

신성로마제국 황제 카를5세로부터 귀족 작위를 받고 궁정화가로 임명됨

동시대 사람들로부터 '별 가운데 있는 태양'이라고 불림

초상화, 풍경화, 신화적 소재, 종교적 주제 다룸

색채주의

틴토레토, 루벤스, 와토, 외젠 들라크루아 등에 영향을 줌
